NASCAR driver JIMMIE JOHNSON ran the Boston Marathon yesterday in 3:09:07, which was an "impressive debut, especially taking into account he was running his first marathon" and did so after competing in Saturday night's Cup Series race in Richmond. Johnson said, "I understand I qualified for next year’s marathon with that time, in my age group, so I just need to look at the schedule, see if it all lays out, then come back" (BOSTONGLOBE.com, 4/15). Former NFLer TEDY BRUSCHI completed the race in 4:35:35 (BOSTON.com, 4/15). Meanwhile, The Boston Athletic Association, which organizes the event, "issued an apology after the American flag was seen in a heap on the ground during the wreath and trophy ceremony" after the race (BOSTONGLOBE.com, 4/15).

HERE TO STAY: Univ. of Washington AD JEN COHEN recently received a three-year extension through June '24, with an "additional two-year option." Cohen receives a "raise in base salary from $460,000 per year to $750,000, plus an increased annual retention bonus of $75,000, payable upon vesting" in '21. Cohen's "new total annual compensation of $825,000 (retention bonus included) should put her in the top half of athletic director pay at public schools in the Pac-12" (THEATHLETIC.com, 4/15).

OFFICIAL BUSINESS: U.S. Supreme Court Justice RUTH BADER GINSBURG sent a personal letter to USWNT D BECKY SAUERBRUNN thanking her and the rest of the team "for the gift of a personalized jersey." Sauerbrunn "sent Ginsburg the special jersey after sporting it during the SheBelieves Cup match on March 2" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 4/15)....U.S. Rep. STEVE SCALISE (R-La.), who co-sponsored the Steve Gleason Enduring Voices Act, visited STEVE GLEASON at his Lake Vista, La., home yesterday to "present a framed copy of the formal legislation to him" (NOLA.com, 4/15).

NAMES: Mavericks Owner MARK CUBAN has “invested in the South African footwear brand Veldskoen.” Cuban and his partners, ANGELA and STEVE WATTS, are “behind Veldskoen’s expansion into the U.S. market, where the shoes are now available online, retailing from $127” (WWD.com, 4/15)....The Pirates’ charitable foundation made a $20,000 donation to help Pittsburgh “improve two city baseball fields” (TRIBLIVE.com, 4/15)....Univision’s “REPUBLICA DEPORTIVA” program on Sunday celebrated its 20th anniversary with a special episode featuring current and former talent from the show (Univision)....Raiders WR ANTONIO BROWN has “settled a lawsuit brought by a man who claimed his child was nearly hit by furniture that Brown allegedly threw off a balcony" (TRIBLIVE.com, 4/15).

IN MEMORY: Former NBC and Turner exec DON ELLIS died April 5 in The Villages, Fla. at the age of 90. Ellis joined NBC Sports as an Associate Producer and Dir in the '60s, and was the producer for the net's coverage of the Jets-Raiders game known as the "Heidi Game." Through the late '70s, Ellis worked as a Producer, Dir, Coordinating Producer and Exec Producer. In '83, Ellis became the Exec Producer of Sports for TBS, "overseeing the development and expansion of Turner's sports department" (THEVILLAGESDAILYSUN.com, 4/14).
