San Diego State Hitting Roadblocks Over Sale Of Mission Valley

SDSU's Mission Valley redevelopment plan calls for a new 35,000-seat football stadium to replace SDCCUGETTY IMAGES

San Diego State officials and city leaders are "not yet aligned on a handful of terms that could make or break the sale of 132 acres of Mission Valley property, a taxpayer asset that includes SDCCU Stadium," according to Jennifer Van Grove of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. An early point of contention "appears to be around the speed of the process and how far talks can progress without a final environmental impact report in place." Also top of mind is "who should pay for what, namely the demolition of the existing football stadium and the creation of a long-promised river park." The update "comes five months after city voters approved Measure G, or the SDSU West citizen’s initiative that directed the city to negotiate with the university for the sale of a portion of its Mission Valley site." The university’s Mission Valley redevelopment plan "calls for a new 35,000-capacity football stadium." The university is "charging toward a transaction close date" in January '20 so that it can "complete construction" of its stadium in time for the '22 football season (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 4/11).
