Red Sox' Commitment To Analytics Displays Growing MLB Trend

The Red Sox are committed to analytics and believe their 15-person staff is "among the five largest in the game, but don’t know that for certain," according to Peter Abraham of the BOSTON GLOBE. The Rays are "thought to have 25 people and Yankees even more." The Dodgers also "have a large group." There is "a bit of a spy vs. spy mentality" when it comes to baseball analytics, with clubs "scouring the media guides and staff lists of opposing teams trying to figure out who is doing what." Red Sox Senior VP & Assistant GM Zack Scott "successfully appealed to ownership for a larger budget so he could attract better candidates." Scott said, “We were competing with Google and Facebook in some instances. Plus, every team has grown. The number of jobs is up 30-40 percent.” Abraham noted some of the "greatest strides have been made in player development." The Red Sox outfitted their minor league parks with TrackMan systems so that pitchers can be "instantly evaluated." The team also "invested in Rapsodo devices to better judge the biomechanics of their pitchers and hitters." Abraham noted privacy issues "will come into play" with an increase in analytics (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/7).

GET IN THE GAME: In Boston, Ysabelle Kempe noted Fenway Park's Green Monster has a "new logo, just in time for the Red Sox home opener" tomorrow, after a "large advertisement featuring MGM Resorts’ roaring lion trademark was unveiled" on Friday. MGM Resorts "replaces the team’s five-year deal with Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut." Under the multiyear agreement, MGM Resorts will "advertise on Red Sox-controlled radio and television stations." The Red Sox also "unveiled an array of new concession snacks, renovations to the press box and player clubhouses, and augmented-reality capabilities for the MLB Ballpark app" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/6). In Massachusetts, Nick O'Malley noted the MGM Resorts logo is "featured in a prominent location right above the center of the manually operated scoreboard" (MASSLIVE.com, 4/5). In Boston, Michael Silverman wrote the MGM Resorts logo that is "now emblazoned in the middle of Fenway’s fabled and iconic Green Monster" is a "hard-to-miss symbol" of the Red Sox' new partnership. MGM Resorts Chair & CEO Jim Murren said, “It’s very prominent. Of course, this is hallowed ground. The fact that Fenway Sports was interested in working with MGM is humbling and we take that very seriously" (BOSTON HERALD, 4/6).
