A Day In The Life With HBSE President Hugh Weber

Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment President HUGH WEBER plays a crucial role in all business proceedings surrounding the Devils, Prudential Center and the 76ers. Weber resides in Northern New Jersey, but his work week generally sees him making trips to the Big Apple, the City of Brotherly Love, as well as nearby Newark. Weber caught up with THE DAILY to outline how he manages to stay on top of everything going on across the three different states.

5:00am: I get up between 5:00-5:15. The first hour of my day is literally quiet. I have to get my brain sorted through, so I do a little bit of reading and I do a lot of thinking about what’s important for that day. I have two boys in high school, HUGH III and JACKSON, and virtually every morning is the same. I get them up around 6:00 and make them breakfast. One has eggs with turkey bacon on bread. One has an omelet with onions and broccoli and then two rice cakes with peanut butter. That’s all they like to eat.

7:15am: Typically, I’ll leave my house around 7:15 each morning. On Mondays, I’m typically in New York working with HBSE’s managing partners, our board. On Tuesdays, I’m typically in Newark working through a lot of the things around the team at the Prudential Center. Wednesdays are dedicated to Philadelphia and the 76ers and being down there. Thursdays and Fridays tend to be more dynamic to where we’re playing, who's playing whom, what’s happening. My schedule is generally driven by geography.

7:30-9:00am: N.Y. is about 40 minutes from my house, so I usually get there by 8:00am. We have topics that we run through to make sure that we’re being proactive about where we want to take HBSE being proactive about where our partners, our board knows what we’re working on and how we’re doing it. Prudential Center is about 15 minutes from my house so I can get there by 7:30am. It has about 180 events a year and it makes it easy for me to run in and make sure a show or concert is set up and make sure they’re okay and that I can get back and have that balance with the kids. It’s an hour and a half drive to Philadelphia so I can get there before 9:00am. Driving is definitely the best way to travel because I’ve found that to be the most productive. I get in the car and call all the way down, call all the way back.

9:00am-5:00pm: Meetings are different every day. We have an incredibly strong administrative staff. The majority of the time that we’re gathering people is to make sure the things we’ve designated as the most important are actually getting done. How a priority shows up for the 76ers might be 100% different for the Devils and Prudential Center. It could be the same priority just coming to life in a different way.

Weber makes it a point at Devils games to interact with fans and staff at Prudential Center HUGH WEBER

7:00-11:00pm: I make almost every Devils game. For the 76ers, it’s more of around a third of the games -- Wednesdays and some weekends. Then it’s travelling with the teams sometimes. There are strategic road trips that we might take with the Devils. If there are things happening in markets that we want to see, we will make it a point to be part of that trip. At games in Newark, my role is a little bit different. I’ll sit in with the coaches after the game, talk to GM RAY SHERO. Whereas in Philly, I’m out afterwards. In Newark it just takes a little bit longer to get out. A couple nights a week I cook for dinner. There are times my boys have games, so we’re always on the move. They play golf, basketball and football. But there’s usually two nights that it’s a full-fledged dinner and I do all the cooking. My daughters BRENNA and ZOE are in college.

11:00pm: If I get home at 11:00, it doesn’t take me long to detox and be quiet. I’ll just turn the light off, I don’t have a TV in my room. By 11:45-12:00 I’m in bed.
