Where Is Everyone? Reds, Blue Jays Games Draw Meager Crowds

With a game-time temperature of 46, only 7,799 fans attended Brewers-Reds last nightGETTY IMAGES

The "smallest crowd in the 17-year history of Great American Ball Park," 7,799 fans, watched the Reds lose to the Brewers yesterday, breaking the "previous low" of 9,087 set in '09, according to Dave Jablonski of the DAYTON DAILY NEWS. This comes after the Reds "set a regular-season record with their crowd of 44,049" on Opening Day (DAYTON DAILY NEWS, 4/2). In Cincinnati, Nightengale & Brookbank wrote "thank the weather" for the "poor attendance." The Reds said that the "game time temperature" for Pirates-Reds on Sunday was only 35 degrees, "tied for the second-coldest" in Great American Ball Park's history. The temperature was about 46 degrees for Brewers-Reds last night (CINCINNATI.com, 4/1).

EMPTY NESTERS: YAHOO SPORTS' Andrew Zuber noted the Blue Jays drew 10,450 in "paid attendance" for their loss to the Orioles last night, the "lowest mark in nearly a decade." Both the Maple Leafs and Raptors were "also in action at the same time," but there were still fewer fans than there had been for "any game" since April 19, 2010, when the Blue Jays drew 10,314 for a Monday night game against the Royals. Monday night games are "notoriously tough draws," and the '19 Orioles are "nobody's idea of a marquee opponent, but this attendance nadir coupled with a home opener that failed to sell out is a far cry from the team that led" the AL in attendance in '16 and '17 (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 4/1). In Toronto, Rob Longley notes last night's crowd "was 6,000 fewer than last year's smallest." Longley: "Weak attendance will be a story for the Jays all season as fans are fed up with the major rebuild underway" (TORONTO SUN, 4/2).
