New MLB Season Brings Ballpark Concession Changes, Upgrades

The Royals this season are "cutting prices on a number of concession items" at Kauffman Stadium, according to Pete Grathoff of the K.C. STAR. A 16-ounce soda will now "cost $3, hot dogs will sell for $4 and cans of Miller Lite will be $5," while popcorn and pretzels "will be available for $3 each." Concessions stands "will have signs indicating the cheaper prices." The Royals also "will have a 'happy hour' on Tuesdays and Fridays from June through September" in which a Miller Lite at the Miller Lite Fountain Bar and Blue Moon Taproom "will cost $3." The special "will be available from when the gates open until first pitch." A deal on Wednesdays "will be offered, too" in which select Boulevard Brewing beers "will cost $4 at the Craft & Draft and at the Boulevard Radler Station in the Outfield Experience" (K.C. STAR, 3/27).

THAT'S A LOT OF CHICKEN: The start of a new MLB season always brings about new concession items across the majors, and the "biggest newcomer" that the Rangers are rolling out at Globe LIfe Park is "a 2-pound piece of fried chicken called the Fowl Pole." The item "comes in a cardboard carrying case with a handle." It costs $27.50 and "comes on a bed of waffle fries with honey mustard and ranch on the side" (GUIDELIVE.com, 3/25). The Cubs and Levy Restaurants added 10 new items the menu at Wrigley Field that will now include "two new pork dishes, ranch chips and the meatless 'Impossible' burger." Other items include a "walking taco, Italian chicken sandwich, a Southwest-style hot dog and grilled three-cheese sandwich" (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 3/25). New items the Brewers have added to concession stands at Miller Park include the Loaded Pork Tamale and fried BBQ corn. The latter is among "five vegetarian food choices" introduced by the team this season (JSONLINE.com, 3/27).

BAR UPGRADES: The Budweiser Terrace above right field at Busch Stadium is "getting a new food stand, the Budweiser Burger Bar," which will offer "three new burger options, all made with two fresh meat patties and served on buns made with Budweiser beer" (STLTODAY.com, 3/28). The Phillies have refurbished the old 5,000-pound Liberty Bell that used to be at old Veterans Stadium and placed it outside Citizens Bank Park and created a "sprawling food and drink oasis inside" the ballpark. Pass & Stow is the "newest game-day hangout." Also added is Foundry's Pizza and Goose Island at the Park (NBCSPORTSPHILADELPHIA.com, 3/26).

EXOTIC EATS: Vegan bowls, grilled vegetable sandwiches and salted edamame are "among the new eats being offered at Tropicana Field" for Rays games this season. Also, ballpark chefs will be "smoking ribs on site, bagging up mesquite-dusted pork rinds and serving bacon cheddar burgers with fried onions and whiskey barbecue sauce." Several local restaurants have "partnered with the Rays this season to provide a menu featuring fried fish, coconut shrimp and gourmet ice cream sandwiches" (TAMPABAY.com, 3/26). New offerings at PNC Park this season include a Quinoa Blueberry Salad, Cinnamon Chipotle Loaded Totchos and a Pittsburg Cone (Pirates).
