Giants Brass Speaks Publicly For First Time Since Baer Incident

The Giants' front office seems to have banded together since Baer took his leave of absenceGETTY IMAGES

The MLB Giants held one of their annual media events Friday, and the organization "put on a brave face in public" for the first time since the incident involving team President & CEO Larry Baer and his wife, according to Al Saracevic of the S.F. CHRONICLE. There was a "rotating cast of longtime executives fronting the operation," including Exec VP/Communications & Advisor to the CEO Staci Slaughter, Exec VP/Administration Alfonso Felder and Exec VP/Business Operations Mario Alioto "standing up and doing the talking." They "said all the right things, for the most part." Instead of "nerves and tension in Baer’s absence, the Giants’ interim leadership has banded together." It "makes sense," as they have been "working together forever." If Baer does not return to his top role, Alioto "would be a fine choice to lead the team going forward." But the "smart money says the league will find a way to settle this quietly, in the near future." Baer could "serve a brief suspension, or seek counseling, then things will likely return to the established pecking order." Alioto said, "We’re just waiting for baseball to decide what they’re going to decide" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 3/23).
