Bay Area Group Calls For MLB To Take Action Against Giants' Baer

Baer has taken a leave of absence from the Giants, but has not been formally disciplined by the team or MLBGETTY IMAGES

A coalition of Bay Area advocates against domestic violence is calling for Giants President & CEO Larry Baer to be "disciplined and possibly suspended" for the incident involving him and his wife that was caught on video earlier this month, according to Phil Matier of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The group wrote a letter to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred "demanding that the league address the incident." S.F. Mayor London Breed said MLB needs to “send a message that any and all acts of violence against women is unacceptable.” Baer has taken a leave of absence from the team, but the group is calling for a "strong public statement that MLB will not accept or tolerate such behavior by anyone in the league, particularly an owner and a CEO." It also calls for a suspension of Baer, a "financial penalty that exceeds the minimum levied against players for domestic violence and physical abuse" and a "requirement that Baer complete an appropriate treatment plan with an organization that specializes in domestic violence" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 3/19). In S.F., Mesloh & Black write the incident "represents more than an embarrassing private quarrel that spilled into public view." It is a "fundamental test" of how seriously MLB views its "responsibility to hold its leaders to the highest standards, in accordance with its own league policy governing player conduct" (SFGATE.com, 3/18).
