Mariners To Test Cash-Free Concessions At T-Mobile Park In '19

The Mariners will test cash-free concessions in parts of T-Mobile Park this season with a pilot project focused on comparisons of similar stands and a deep analytics dive into transaction data and fan surveys. Mariners VP/Ticket Operations & Event Services Malcolm Rogel said the team could also potentially test self-serve kiosks as it plans to install new point-of-service systems and could eventually go to a wider cash-free model in '20. “What we really want to do is dip our toe in this and try to understand what’s the good and the bad that comes out so we can create a road map and understand where this does go,” he said. Rogel added there needs to be more concessions data as the team looks at potentially going cash-free. “In ticketing we have every piece of data you could ever imagine; when they bought, how they bought, what they bought last year,” Rogel said. “And this kind of thing for food and beverage is just not there yet.” Rogel said part of that is because the current concessions POS system at T-Mobile Park is older. The Mariners will be issuing an RFP later this year for a new POS system, with plans to have it installed in '20. The Mariners and concessionaire Centerplate will try seeing how the cash-free model does at one stand and compare it to others with a similar location and traffic flow.
