Major Agency Rumored To Be Repping NFL Rookies Sans Agent Fee

One of the big rumors at the NFL Scouting Combine was that a major talent agency is "representing rookies this year with a zero percent agent fee," a move that is "about keeping them as clients until they sign their second contract after Year 4," according to Ben Volin of the BOSTON GLOBE. The 3% commission on rookie deals that agents receive "pales in comparison to the commissions they receive on free agent contracts." The 0% deal "comes with a large marketing agreement," reportedly around $50,000, that the player "would have to pay back if he leaves the agency before signing a second contract." Volin: "If you’re a smaller agent with just a handful of clients, how are you supposed to compete with that?" (BOSTON GLOBE, 3/5).
