Carlos Cordeiro Says Future Of Gold Cup Uncertain Past '21

Cordeiro said there have been talks between Conmebol and Concacaf for a combined Copa America-type eventGETTY IMAGES

U.S. Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro made the "surprising admission" that the future of the Concacaf Gold Cup could be "in question" in the coming years, according to Miki Turner of THE ATHLETIC. Cordeiro over the weekend at U.S. Soccer's annual general meeting in Phoenix said the Gold Cup is "only legislated for this year and 2021, so it could go on but it may not happen." Cutting the event "would likely prove to be a divisive decision, as it provides competitive games for the national team." However, with the end of the Confederations Cup, there is "no longer a reward for winning the regional tournament." It is "possible another competition could take its place, and discussions have been ongoing" between Concacaf and Conmebol "regarding a joint tournament." Cordeiro said there have been "talks in the last year" between Conmebol and Concacaf on a "kind of combined Copa America, but they haven’t been able to come to an agreement on that" (THEATHLETIC.com, 2/17). ESPN.com noted the Gold Cup pits Concacaf nations against each other every two years. The U.S. is "primarily hosting" the '19 edition this summer in 15 venues across the country, with two group-stage matches being played in Costa Rica. The U.S. has "served as host or co-host for the tournament since the current format was implemented" in '91 (ESPN.com, 2/18). Concacaf this morning in a statement clarified it is "fully committed" to the Gold Cup and that the '19, '21 and '23 editions "are part of the FIFA Calendar" (TWITTER.com, 2/19).
