Former Goldman Sachs Exec Building $40M SoCal Tennis Center

Energy Capital Partners Founder Doug Kimmelman, who spent 22 years with Goldman Sachs, is spending $40M to "build a tennis and education center" in Carson, Calif., according to Amanda Gordon of BLOOMBERG NEWS. The project "came into focus" after Kimmelman's wife, Carol, died of ovarian cancer in '17, and Kimmelman began thinking "about what to do to honor her memory." Kimmelman "reached out to the USTA," which steered the project "toward establishing the West Coast hub of the National Junior Tennis and Learning Program." It will "contain as many as 52 tennis courts." Kimmelman "hustled an introduction to Tiger Woods, impressed with the TGR Foundation’s STEM program in Anaheim," and Woods "found a 'synergy' with the project honoring Carol," who played tennis at USC. TGR is "running a learning center on the 80-acre site." It will be 25,000 square feet and "contain labs, classrooms and interactive stations." Woods said that the foundation is "looking to extend its reach globally to reach millions of kids." The cost of the project is estimated to be $60-100M. The plans are "going through county approvals." Construction could begin in '20 with a completion date projected for '21 (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 2/13).
