Purdue reported an excess of $7.9M for '17-18, compared to a loss of $868,000 in '16-17GETTY IMAGES

Purdue’s athletic department during the '17-18 school year surpassed the $100M mark in revenue "for the first time," according to Mike Carmin of the Lafayette JOURNAL & COURIER. The school reported an excess of $7.9M, "as opposed to a loss of $868,000" in '16-17. More than 53% of the athletic department’s revenue "came from the Big Ten Conference, including television rights, NCAA distributions and radio rights." Contributions of $19.3M "produced the second-most revenue." The athletic department generated more than $11M in ticket sales, including $7M in football -- the most since '13. While revenue increased, from $84M in '16-17 to $103M in '17-18, "so did expenses." Purdue reported $95M in total spending, an uptick of $10M "compared to the year before." Football reported a $1.4M deficit, as $1.7M in "severance payments to former coach Darrell Hazell prevented the program from showing a profit" (Lafayette JOURNAL & COURIER, 1/29).
