Logitech CEO Thinks Esports Could Turn Into Biggest Spectator Sport

Logitech President & CEO Bracken Darrell said he believes esports is destined to become the world's "largest spectator sport," as game players under 25 are "so into gaming relative to any single regular sport." Darrell, appearing on CNBC's "Mad Money," said, "Those people are spectators of esports online and in fact, more people are watching people play esports online than are watching CNN, Netflix, ESPN or HBO combined. So, those people are going to grow up, and as they grow up and they (have) kids, it's going to get bigger and bigger." Darrell: "We always believed there would be game titles that would come in as this esports rise happened and exploded, and for the first five or six years I was here we didn't see that. We saw steady, strong increase by 'League of Legends' and 'Overwatch' and the games that were already out there. But 'Fortnite' is the first one to come in and really explode onto the scene, and I think there will be others." Darrell said he "could "absolutely" see students train to earn college esports scholarships, He said, "You're going to see it sooner than anybody thinks. There are already some colleges starting to entertain and offer scholarships for esports athletes and it's going to grow like wildfire" ("Mad Money," CNBC, 1/22).
