Romo Shines Again In CBS' Coverage Of Thrilling AFC Championship

One of Romo's numerous predictions was Sony Michel’s go-ahead TD late in the fourth quarterGETTY IMAGES

CBS' Tony Romo during yesterday's call of the Patriots-Chiefs AFC Championship "was on his A-game, predicting several Patriots plays during a key stretch of the fourth quarter and overtime," according to Peter Bailey-Wells of the BOSTON GLOBE. Romo correctly called Patriots RB Sony Michel’s "touchdown run to put the Patriots ahead with 3:32 left in the fourth quarter." Later, with 53 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Romo "suggested that Tom Brady would just look up the field on third down and throw" to TE Rob Gronkowski. Romo during overtime "predicted Brady would try to connect" with WR Julian Edelman "across the middle of the field on third down" (BOSTON GLOBE, 1/21). USA TODAY's Andy Nesbitt writes Romo was "once again at the top of his game" late in yesterday's action, as he "nailed so many plays in the Patriots’ last few drives" (USATODAY.com, 1/21). In DC, Cindy Boren: "Take a bow, Tony Romo. The AFC championship game belonged to you" (WASHINGTON POST, 1/21). In K.C., Pete Grathoff: "It’s possible that no one had a better night than CBS broadcaster Tony Romo" (KANSASCITY.com, 1/21). SPORTING NEWS' Sara Jane Harris: "The legend of Tony Romo continues" (SPORTINGNEWS.com, 1/20).

ELITE STATUS: SI.com's Jimmy Traina writes Romo's performance last night "was epic," as Romo "threw caution to the wind Sunday and went nuts with the predictions." They "became reality every single time," as he would "look at the defense and within seconds tell us, in great detail, what the offense would do." Romo has the "ability to drop high-level X's and O's analysis, but make it sound easy for viewers to understand and consume." Most analysts "speak inside play-calling language to show you they're smarter than you and that they are experts," but Romo "doesn't come off like that even a little teeny tiny bit." He also is popular with viewers because "one minute he's dropping that high-level X's and O's [analysis,] but the next minute he says something that makes him sound like a typical crazy sports fan." Traina: "No NFL broadcaster today is as relatable to fans than Romo" (SI.com, 1/21). In Philadelphia, Rob Tornoe writes Romo "owned" the broadcast.  However, often "overlooked as playing an important role in Romo’s success is his play-by-play partner Jim Nantz, who also called a terrific game." Nantz "continually set Romo up to make his predictions and analysis prior to the snap" (PHILLY.com, 1/21).

TWITTER IS BLOWN AWAY: AWFUL ANNOUNCING's Matt Clapp noted Twitter users were "blown away by Romo’s work on the night" (AWFULANNOUNCING.com, 1/20). The MMQB's Andrew Brandt: "After decades of analysts we now have a true game-changer in Romo." The South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Omar Kelly: "Tony Romo needs to be an analyst for the rest of life. I get so excited when he’s calling a game. No competition for him." ESPN's Stephania Bell: "He proves it IS possible to educate and entertain at the same time ... all with the enthusiasm of every fan of the game." NBC's Willie Geist: "His instincts and genuine thrill for the moment are great, but this is preparation. He knows the Patriots’ offense almost as well as Brady does." Cleveland-based WKRK-FM's Dustin Fox: "I still can’t get over Romo calling every single play last night before it happens. Incredible." The Green Bay Press-Gazette's Ryan Wood: "Tony Romo was simply amazing." FS1's Nick Bahe: "Tony Romo was absolutely outstanding tonight. Analysts are there to tell the viewers how things are happening, why things are happening, and forecast what will/could happen. Romo was off the charts in all 3 areas." ESPN.com's John Keim: "Romo was so on the money tonight. So prepared and quick to see what’s going on pre snap. Yeah he played. So have others and they don’t see it like he does." ESPN's Gene Wojciechowski: "He called a helluva game in the booth yesterday ... Impressive." NFL Giants blogger John Schmeelk: "Best in business right now." The Austin American-Stateman's Brian Davis: "Wait until the non-football folks show up at the party on Super Sunday and hear Romo calling out plays. They’ll really be stunned." FS1's Jason McIntyre: "Some NFL team next offseason is going to make an offer to Tony Romo to be their head coach. A real student of the game" (TWITTER.com, 1/21).

JUST PART OF THE GAME: THE ATHLETIC's Richard Deitsch recently spoke with Romo and asked why he has adapted so well to broadcasting. Romo said, "I don’t pretend to have all the answers. I do think in some ways I have studied the game for 20 years and, at my core, I have tried to improve and get better at football. I think that has really helped me do this job, where I just know a lot of stuff that I have thought about over the years" (THEATHLETIC.com, 1/21).
