Weekend Plans With PeacePlayers Int'l Operations Manager Victor Robinson

PeacePlayers' Saturday celebration will see Detroit children participate in several hoops competitionsPEACE PLAYERS INT'L

Nonprofit PeacePlayers Int'l Operations Manager VICTOR ROBINSON is leading the company's Detroit-based MLK Day celebrations this weekend ahead of Monday's holiday, and the Detroit native doesn't take the opportunity to unite the city's youth for granted. PeacePlayers, which receives support from both Nike and the Pistons, on Saturday will stage its second annual MLK Day celebration at Wayne State Univ.'s recreation center from 10:00am-2:00pm ET, with local children from various backgrounds coming together to remember DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.'s legacy. Robinson: "I graduated from Detroit public schools, I went to Michigan State. Then I traveled the world a little bit and got some real-life experiences that I then brought back to my community. To be able to do this program and have young people look up to me as I did my mentors is just an awesome feeling. It motivates me each day." Robinson caught up with THE DAILY to walk us through his busy schedule this weekend.

COMING TOGETHER: This week has been all about prepping for Saturday as far as getting logistics and getting all the details ready. Friday we have the Nike Global Community Impact Team flying in. They’ll be bringing in a photo booth for our youth to partake in and they’ll also have T-shirts to give away. Last year we launched our MLK celebration simultaneously in Detroit, Brooklyn and Baltimore. This year we’ll be launching it at all five of our sites simultaneously to include L.A. and Chicago. Our Detroit event has partnered with Wayne State this year and we'll be at their recreation center on campus with two full basketball courts and a ton of things for our young people from the southwest Detroit and Cody Rouge communities to go around and have a good time. We’ll have a 3-point contest, a skills competition. We try to bridge those communities because they are culturally diverse and their young people don’t always get the chance to interact. There’s some from African-American descent, Hispanic/Latinos and Middle Eastern culture that we bring together to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy.

REASON FOR CELEBRATION: Dr. King stood for justice for all and we’re also going to hone in on his legacy with a breakout workshop in addition to the on-court activities. Off the court we’ll be talking about how ingrained his vision is in this country’s foundation. We’ll give the kids an opportunity to do some visual art or some performing arts like a song/rap/dance/speech. Just giving them an opportunity to express what they want their own legacy to be in honor of Dr. King. There will also be a ton of giveaways including Nike gift cards and Pistons tickets.

IN THE MEANTIME: I’m always around the game of golf, and when I do get some free time on the weekends I like to hit the driving range or play nine holes with some friends. Outside of that I am a sports fanatic. I’m always watching the Pistons, Lions, Tigers, Michigan State football and basketball. I’m always glued to a game for one of my teams.
