Big Boi Joins SB Halftime Show, Ensures It Has Local Presence

Rapper Big Boi will be part of the Super Bowl LIII halftime show, alleviating concern that in a game being played in Atlanta, an "epicenter of rap and hip-hop, no locals would be represented," according to Bo Emerson of the ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION. The NFL yesterday officially announced Maroon 5 will headline the show and be accompanied by Big Boi and fellow rapper Travis Scott. It has been "known for a while that Maroon 5 would perform," while the other acts "were more up in the air." The last couple halftime acts were announced in the fall, but the NFL "apparently preferred a lineup locked in before unveiling 'Maroon 5 and Friends.'" The show became "embroiled in calls for boycotts and protests as performers turned down the NFL as a sign of their support" for Colin Kaepernick and other players who have "taken a knee during the national anthem at games to decry police brutality and racial injustice" (AJC.com, 1/13). BILLBOARD's Hilary Hughes reported Scott only agreed to be part of the gig "after the NFL agreed to join him in donating to a cause for social justice." Scott "made a $500,000 donation in partnership with the NFL to 'social justice accelerator' Dream Corps," which was founded by CNN's Van Jones in '14. He also will "work with the NFL on additional initiatives" (BILLBOARD.com, 1/13).
