Connecticut Legislators Submit Bill To Legalize Sports Betting

A bipartisan group of legislators from Connecticut’s southeastern delegation "submitted a bill that would establish online and in-person sports betting in the state," according to a front-page piece by Alex Putterman of the HARTFORD COURANT. Under the proposed law, sports betting would be "operated by the state’s casinos." Lawmakers are "expected to address sports betting early on in the upcoming legislative session," which begins tomorrow. Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods are the two casinos that will "likely host a large portion of sports betting," while other "potential sports betting operators in Connecticut include off-track betting sites and the CT Lottery." The proposed law would "clear the way for not only in-person betting at casinos but also for mobile betting." Despite "bipartisan support in the legislature, sports betting has several key hurdles to clear before it becomes legal" (HARTFORD COURANT, 1/8). Connecticut state Sen. Cathy Osten said, "Rhode Island has already started this, and Massachusetts is not far behind. This will bring us into line with our neighbors" (Norwich BULLETIN, 1/8).
