Nashville Negotiating Deal To Host Annual NASCAR Awards Banquet

Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp. President & CEO Butch Spyridon confirmed that he is "negotiating a deal that could bring the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series awards banquet to town," according to Mike Organ of the Nashville TENNESSEAN. The timing of the negotiations is "interesting considering a deal was struck in December between Speedway Motorsports and Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway operator Tony Formosa that laid the groundwork to bring NASCAR back to Music City" (TENNESSEAN.com, 1/7). SPORTS BUSINESS JOURNAL's Adam Stern, who first reported the city and NASCAR were in talks, notes hosting the banquet would add to Nashville's "increasing importance for the sport," as the event "generates national media exposure for the host city." It would also be another "feather in the cap for Nashville’s ability to land big events." NASCAR has "held the banquet for the last 10 years in Las Vegas." N.Y. "played host to the event for 27 years before that." NASCAR’s deal with the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority, which "included an annual $400,000 subsidy, expired and was not renewed" for '18. But NASCAR "still returned there for the event last year as it plotted long-term plans." Charlotte was also "thought to be in the mix to land the banquet" (SPORTS BUSINESS JOURNAL, 1/7 issue).
