49ers' Shanahan, Lynch Strongly Opposed To Being On "Hard Knocks"

The 49ers are among the five teams eligible to be selected for HBO's "Hard Knocks" this year, but being "forced to do it" is the only way the team would land on the show, and it would be "against the objections" of coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch, according to Matt Maiocco of NBCSPORTSBAYAREA.com. Shanahan said of the 49ers potentially being on the show, “You will see the worst entertainment possible by me.” Shanahan and Lynch both said that they "would not comply with the positioning of a camera in the office of the coach and general manager to capture the interactions with players as they are being cut in training camp." The NFL can "force a team to participate in the show, as long at it meets three requirements: the organization has not been featured on the show in the past 10 years, the club has not been to the playoffs in the past two years, and the team does not have a first-year head coach." The 49ers, Raiders, Giants, Lions, and Redskins "could be forced to participate in the series under those criteria." Lynch said, “I love the show, but I think some things are best left behind closed doors" (NBCSPORTSBAYAREA.com, 1/2).

WHO COULD IT BE? In DC, Scott Allen wrote the Redskins appearing on “Hard Knocks” would "make the team’s preseason a whole lot more interesting." The Redskins "weren’t interested in appearing" in '15. Former Redskins GM Scot McCloughan in '16 said that the team would "'never' sign up to be featured on 'Hard Knocks.'" NFL Films "doesn’t want an unwilling participant, so unless the Redskins have had a change of heart about appearing on the show, don’t expect an HBO presence in Richmond this summer." The Giants, with RB Saquon Barkley and WR Odell Beckham Jr., as well as the Raiders, with "camera-loving coach Jon Gruden, both seem like better bets to be featured" (WASHINGTON POST, 1/3). CBSSPORTS.com's John Breech wrote Raiders are the "obvious" pick for "Hard Knocks" in '19. Putting Gruden on HBO for one hour a week "practically guarantees that this would go down as the craziest season of 'Hard Knocks' ever" (CBSSPORTS.com, 1/2).
