Congress May Take Action Following Release Of USOC-Nassar Report

Moran said the report's findings will help his committee finish its work on the Nassar scandalGETTY IMAGES

After the release of the Ropes & Gray investigation into the USOC's handling of the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal, U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), chair of the subcommittee that oversees the USOC, said that the report's findings "would help the subcommittee finish its own work in investigating the Nassar scandal," according to O'Brien & Bachman of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. Moran yesterday said that he believes there will be "legislative changes to the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act" -- the '78 law that "charters and grants monopoly status to the USOC, and outlines requirements for the sports governing bodies the organization oversees." Moran said, "We will make clear that USOC has responsibilities when it comes to behavior that occurs at the governing body level" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 12/11). U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), also a member of the subcommittee overseeing the USOC, said after the report was released that a "criminal investigation would be 'highly appropriate.'" Blumenthal said, “There’s a federal responsibility to a public trust that many have been violated, in addition to the law” (N.Y. TIMES, 12/11). Attorney John Manly, who represents many of Nassar’s victims, called the report an "unbelievably stinging indictment of the behavior of the USOC." He said, “We hope that law enforcement will finally investigate this” (WASHINGTON POST, 12/11).
