CBS Draws Best Alabama-LSU Rating Since '13 Despite Blowout

CBS on Saturday drew a 6.7 overnight rating for Alabama-LSU, marking the annual matchup’s best figure since ’13 (6.9) and the best figure for CFB game this season to date. The game, which pitted a pair of top 5 teams against one another, was up 81% from last year. Alabama-LSU peaked at an 8.0 from 9:00-9:30pm ET as Alabama took a commanding lead. Birmingham drew a 52.6 local rating for the game. New Orleans ranked No. 2 with a 38.3 local figure. Meanwhile, Fox had the two highest-rated afternoon CFB games in Week 10. Ohio State’s 36-31 win over Nebraska at 12:00pm drew a 3.2 overnight. That was followed by West Virginia’s 42-41 win over Texas at 3:45pm, which got a 3.0 overnight (Austin Karp, THE DAILY).

GLASS HALF FULL: AWFUL ANNOUNCING's Phillip Bupp noted considering Alabama "won big and dominated rather early on, it’s likely that ratings would have been even better if the game was more competitive." The fact that ratings "peaked closer to halftime than toward the end of the game, there was room to build an even bigger audience." In that aspect, it is "probably a bittersweet ratings victory for CBS but it’s still a good number and will probably remain the highest rated game until the SEC Championship" (AWFULANNOUNCING.com, 11/4).

LOOKING AHEAD: In N.Y., Zach Braziller writes with few obstacles in their way, a CFP foursome of Alabama, Clemson, Michigan and Notre Dame is "very realistic." Those schools are "juggernauts and national brands that would actually bring a much-needed different flavor to the semifinals." The star power "would be off the charts." Alabama-Clemson is the national championship "everyone wants to see, a fourth meeting between the last two champs in the playoff in the last four years" (N.Y. POST, 11/5).
