NBA All-Star Game Returning To Cleveland In '22 After 25-Year Hiatus

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver "officially announced Cleveland as the host" of the '22 All-Star Game, which will be held at a renovated Quicken Loans Arena, according to Chris Fedor of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. The league will be "commemorating its 75th anniversary" that year. The Cavaliers "previously hosted" the All-Star Game in '97, and had been "working to bring the All-Star Game back to Cleveland eventually." However, renovations to Quicken Loans Arena "made it too difficult to meet the timeline" for either '20 or '21. The logo for the game "hasn't been revealed yet." A source said that the Cavs will "collaborate with the NBA to come up with something fitting for the city" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 11/2). Silver said that there were a "number of 'passionate' discussions about returning to Cleveland" for the All-Star Game. He said because "conversations were ongoing about potential upgrades" at Quicken Loans Arena, the league "wanted to wait until those discussions were done and obviously successful before we could lock in the day" (ESPN.com, 11/1).

BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME: In Sacramento, Jason Anderson notes Kings officials and city leaders "expressed disappointment" after failing to land the '22 game, but they "still hope to bring basketball's biggest extravaganza to the capital city in the future." The Kings "could still be considered" for '23 under the "two-year bid it submitted to the league in February." However, sources said that Sacramento has "not yet met the NBA's hotel room requirements." Kings President of Business Operations John Rinehart said that the team's All-Star Game proposal "sought to address the hotel shortage by docking cruise ships at the Port of Sacramento and partnering with Airbnb to reserve up to 1,000 home and apartments, but it wasn't enough." The NBA "requires host cities to provide 6,000 hotel rooms in the area around the arena, many of which must be four-star quality." There are "16,000 rooms in the Sacramento region, but only about 3,000 in the downtown area" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 11/2).
