Franchise Notes

In Cleveland, Doug Lesmerises writes since the Haslam family took over the Browns in '12, the team has a 21-75-1 record, due in part because ownership has "picked the wrong people, handled them the wrong way, set up an organizational structure doomed to fail and sowed dysfunction." Yet, the Haslam family investment has "doubled in value." But "don't give them credit for writing checks," as the Haslams in the end will "cash one giant check and profit from the pain of Browns fans." Lesmerises: "The Haslams are the problem with the Browns" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 10/31).

GOLDEN GIVE BACK: In Atlanta, Zachary Hansen noted to celebrate the team's 50th anniversary in the city, the Hawks are "giving back" by "completing 50 acts of service designed to help 50,000 people." The initiatives "include public court renovations, community conversations, employee community service projects, basketball camps and clinics, as well as basketball equipment donations to Atlanta nonprofits." The team has also "identified 50 people and organizations who 'have epitomized being True to Atlanta'" over the past 50 years, and they will be "recognized at home games throughout the season" (AJC.com, 10/30).

PRACTICING PATIENCE: Marlins CEO Derek Jeter said he is "learning" to be patient about the team's rebuild. Jeter said he has no patience, "so it's very difficult at times to watch because you want things to happen very quickly." Jeter: "It takes time to build a championship-caliber team and to build a first-class organization. We will get there" ("The Daily Show," Comedy Central, 10/30).
