MLB Postseason Viewership Down 8% Headed Into World Series

The MLB Postseason is averaging 4.39 million viewers headed into the World Series, down 8% from last year, but up 3% from two years ago. There were 28 postseason games across ESPN, Fox, TBS, FS1 and MLB Net through the LCS, which included the Dodgers-Brewers NLCS going to seven games. Last year, there were 31 postseason games to this point. There were no win-or-go-home Game 5s in the LDS this year. Last year, two LDS series went to Game 5s, and the Astros-Yankees ALCS went to a Game 7. When including streaming figures on vMVPDs such as YouTube TV, MLB's postseason average gets to 4.42 million viewers to date, which is down 7% from '17. TBS had its best postseason figures since ’15, fueled by Red Sox-Yankees in the ALDS. The net averaged 4.93 million viewers over 13 games, up from 4.64 million last year (14 games) and 3.18 million two years ago (12 games). TBS’ coverage in ’15 (6.35 million viewers) featured 14 games and the benefit of some strong baseball markets with the Cubs, Cardinals, Dodgers and Mets. Meanwhile, FS1 this postseason averaged 3.76 million viewers over 11 telecasts, which is the cable net’s lowest postseason average since ’15, when it carried two Blue Jays series without the benefit of numbers from the Toronto market. FS1 last year averaged 5.04 million viewers for postseason coverage (13 games). Despite the decline, the four most-watched telecasts on FS1 since last year's MLB postseason were NLCS telecasts this year.
