Athletes Are Increasingly Looking For Outlets To Create Content

Messler sees The Players' Tribune as a complement to more traditional media outletsROXXE IRELAND

The final panel on the opening day of the '18 NeuLion Sports Media & Technology conference in N.Y. focused on the role of athletes as content creators. The Players’ Tribune President & co-Founder Jaymee Messler discussed her athlete-centric site as it celebrates its fourth anniversary. Messler: “We’ve been able to show what the brand stands for -- premium content, authentic storytelling.” She noted the site has also developed a huge female audience. Messler feels her site is a “complement to traditional media.” Messler: “We’re actually providing stories about these athletes that you wouldn’t know about otherwise. So when ESPN or Turner or whoever is looking to cover a sport, and they’re looking to find about more about these athletes, it’s actually just creating more content.” Also featured on the panel was Hulu Head of Live TV & Sports Marketing Michael Schneider, who discussed the importance of sports to his platform and where it sits with respect to content creation. Schneider: “If you look at the market right now, a lot of what is out there from a brand and creative perspective is very similar. We feel, similar to Players’ Tribune, that partnering with athletes is a really authentic way to talk to fans and a prospective audience and perhaps get them to make that jump and sign up for our service.”

MARTELLUS' GREATEST HITS: Former NFLer and The Players’ Tribune Creative Ambassador Martellus Bennett provided some memorable moments during the panel with a heavy dose of profanity-laced humor. Here are some of his best one-liners.

* On the difference between what LeBron James is doing in media vs. himself: “I actually create things. (His team) produces things.”

* On Schneider using the Jets as an example of creating personalized content: “That’s bad content.”

* Talking to panel moderator Kay Adams about her employer, NFL Network: “You can have fun, but it’s corporate fun. A corporate Christmas party is a lot different than a Martellus Bennett Christmas party. Corporate fun is different from Martellus fun.”

* On why The Players’ Tribune is a destination: “You go to Players’ Tribune to say shit most people don’t want you to say.”

* On his multiple roles at the site: “I consider myself a dandelion just floating through the air and I just land where I’m needed. I don’t need a silo.”

* On football: “It’s checkers. It’s not chess. All you got to do is catch the ball, see the ball and run with the ball. It’s not hard.”
