Panthers' Reid Continues Kneeling In Protest During National Anthem

Reid said he spoke to his teammates about his protest before the game, and also informed Ron RiveraGETTY IMAGES

Panthers S Eric Reid, who knelt during the anthem before Giants-Panthers yesterday in his first game with the club, said that he was "further inspired by current events, including the confirmation of controversial judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court," according to Jason Reid of THE UNDEFEATED. Reid was also inspired by the recent "hiring of the police officer who fatally shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice" in '14. Reid said of both events, "That's unacceptable." Reid: "I feel our country is moving backwards. The only way to change that is to keep talking about it, keep raising awareness (and) keep doing what we're doing." After the anthem, Reid went to the bench, where he was "warmly greeted by many teammates," including DE Julius Peppers, who "shook Reid's hand and hugged him" (THEUNDEFEATED.com, 10/7). Reid said that he spoke to his teammates about his protest before the game, and that he "informed coach Ron Rivera that he would be continuing it." Reid said that every response was the same, "We support you, man. We're here for you" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 10/8). Reid said of his decision, "I've always told myself when the time comes to stop kneeling, I will stop. But that time has not come." Reid added that "more steps need to be done to prevent racial and social injustice." Reid: "We have made baby steps, but people try to give crumbs but present them as cakes." The AP's Steve Reed noted after the game, Reid "wore a shirt that read 'Know your rights' and listed 10 points" (AP, 10/7).

NOT-SO-FRIENDLY FIRE: NBCSPORTS.com's Peter King writes one thing Reid should "not be commended" for is criticizing the Players Coalition, which has NFLers "around the league working on issues ranging from bail and sentencing reform to working on police and community relations." If Reid wants to effect change the "way he sees fit, he should do that." Instead, Reid "backhands players" for trying to effect change in another way, apparently because the coalition is taking $90M over seven years from the league as "part of its work." Reid and Colin Kaepernick have been "done wrong but the league," and Reid is "likely angry that the Players Coalition has not done more for Kaepernick in particular." But "minimizing the efforts of the Players Coalition is small" (NBCSPORTS.com, 10/8).
