Potential Homes For Raiders Dwindling Should Team Opt Out Of Lease

The Raiders are threatening to leave Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum after this season if the city of Oakland "makes good on its threat to file a multimillion-dollar antitust lawsuit" against the team and the NFL over the club's move to Las Vegas, but the options of "finding a place to play elsewhere in the Bay Area look slim," according to Matier & Ross of the S.F. CHRONICLE. There has been speculation that the Raiders "have their eyes on" the Univ. of California's Memorial Stadium or Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto. However, a Cal spokesperson said that the Raiders have not contacted the school and that it is "unlikely the school would entertain" the team playing on campus given the "many logistical challenges." Stanford officials also said that they have had "no contact" with the Raiders. NFL sources said that the Raiders have "steered clear" of Levi's Stadium and San Jose State Univ.'s CEFCU Stadium. Matier & Ross noted playing at AT&T Park for a season "doesn't appear to be a realistic option given the toll on the field and the cost of converting it from football to baseball and back." Sources said that odds are the Raiders "wind up playing for a year or two" at UNLV's Sam Boyd Stadium until their new venue is complete (S.F. CHRONICLE, 10/3). However, in Las Vegas, Michael Gehlken cites a source as saying that Sam Boyd Stadium is "not considered a contingency site" for the Raiders should their lease with the Coliseum not be extended. The Raiders' current lease in Oakland is "due to expire" after this season (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 10/4).
