MLB Cardinals Chair Not Sounding Alarm After Missing Playoffs

With 88 wins, the Cardinals failed to make the playoffs for the third straight yearGETTY IMAGES

MLB Cardinals Chair & CEO Bill DeWitt Jr. suggested that the team will "'wade in' to a star-studded free-agent class" this offseason, according to Derrick Goold of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. Dewitt said of team missing the playoffs again, "It’s not like, ‘Oh, we better win the division next year or we’re going to turn everything upside down.’ That’s not our view. I think that’s a dangerous approach because then you put people in position going all-in as the model." He added, "Playoffs are our goal. My goal is to win enough games to make the playoffs, whatever that number happens to be." Goold notes the talent available in this winter's free agency is "no secret," with Bryce Harper and Manny Machado headlining the class. Dewitt: "There is value in star players. No question about it. I think the question has to be, ‘What is the value?’ You can’t fall in love with some name player at the expense of making a bad decision which is going to hurt you down the road." The Cardinals finished with an 88-74 record, which would have been "good enough to get a playoff berth in four of the past seven years." Dewitt said, "I’m aware of the frustration of our fans. ... We were right there and couldn’t close it out" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 10/4).
