Recent Driver Shuffle Has Arris Reconsidering Future In NASCAR

It is unclear whether Arris has an out clause from its JGR deal that is triggered with a driver swapGETTY IMAGES

Telecom equipment company Arris’ future as a brand in NASCAR remains murky amid changes at Joe Gibbs Racing, and that is impacting multiple driver transactions around the garage. JGR is set to oust Daniel Suarez from the No. 19 Toyota after this season to pick up Martin Truex Jr., whose team is folding after ’18. That move also impacts Suarez, as Arris is his primary sponsor. Both sources and Suarez himself have said in recent weeks that it appeared Arris would have to stay at JGR next year, because the company's deal was with the team and not the driver. But sources in recent days said that Arris’ future has suddenly become unclear and that it is weighing all its options -- including just sponsoring Suarez at a new team next year or exiting from NASCAR team sponsorship entirely. It is unclear whether Arris has an out clause from its JGR deal that is triggered with a driver swap or whether such a move would come by other means like a buyout. Sources added that the situation was still playing out and that there were key meetings set to be held this week. Arris’ agency in NASCAR is MKTG.

MUSICAL CHAIRS: Suarez has talked with Richard Childress Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing about rides next year, but the complications with Suarez’ funding has seen RCR shift its attention to signing Xfinity Series driver Daniel Hemric. RCR is close to signing Hemric to replace Ryan Newman as the driver of its No. 31 Chevy in the Monster Energy Cup Series next year, according to sources. Hemric does not bring sponsorship with him, but RCR is expecting to hold onto several -- if not all -- of its current sponsors on the No. 31, including Caterpillar and Grainger. RCR adding Hemric sharpens the possibility of Suarez going to SHR, which is considering trying to put together a B2B deal between team co-Owner Gene Haas and Mexican telecom magnate Carlos Slim Domit, who has backed Suarez throughout his career.
