MLL Raising Salary Cap, Adding Games In Bid For League Growth

MLL players on average currently make between $9,000-$16,000 per seasonMLL

MLL next season will "raise the salary cap" by 51%, add an extra player to the game-day roster and add two games to the 14-game schedule, marking an "investment in the product" by Commissioner Sandy Brown, according to Marisa Ingemi of the BOSTON HERALD. Brown said the league has "tried to make up for lost time." Brown: "Our guys need to be compensated differently and our owners came together. Adding more games, we want more content for our fans and more opportunities for our players to play and partners and sponsors to activate." Ingemi notes on average, MLL players "make $9,000-$16,000 per season." Brown said that he is "very supportive" of players also playing in the NLL. Brown: "It's good for our game for them to be able to make money, but, at the same time, the indoor game brings a lot to the outdoor game." Ingemi notes a solution to the overlap of the MLL and NLL seasons is "near." Brown said it will be a "result fans will be happy with" despite not yet speaking to NLL Commissioner Nick Sakiewicz. For Brown, while the "public support is there" for players participating in both leagues, it is the MLL brand that "comes first, and the addition of two games means more time dedicated to the outdoor league." Brown said, "We, as a league, need to be a 12-month a year league" (BOSTON HERALD, 9/18). In Boston, Dan McLoone noted MLL is expected to make "several more announcements about changes with an eye on increasing popularity" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/18).
