Josh Lewin Launches Site Around Anxiety/Depression Awareness

Lewin has heard from several athletes and even more everyday people willing to share their storiesJOSH LEWIN

Mets radio broadcaster JOSH LEWIN, who "deals with generalized anxiety disorder," launched a website, Okay Together, that has "collected more than 80 stories from athletes, entertainers and TV & radio personalities detailing their bouts with anxiety," according to Tim Britton of THE ATHLETIC. Lewin was "compelled in part by the suicides" of ANTHONY BOURDAIN and KATE SPADE this summer to start the project to help the "almost 40 million Americans" who deal with anxiety and/or depression. The stories are "culled from sources all around the internet, with Lewin calling himself 'happily astonished' at their rate of proliferation in recent years." Subjects include Seahawks WR BRANDON MARSHALL, former NFLer STEVE SMITH, Cavaliers F KEVIN LOVE, Spurs F DEMAR DEROZAN and Basketball HOFer JERRY WEST. Okay Together "serves also as a mantra for Lewin and the community he hopes to help build -- a community that in appreciating its size can acknowledge its normality." The goal of Okay Together is "two-pronged." The first is to "provide encouragement for athletes and entertainers to, in Lewin’s words, 'come out of the shadows.'" Second, by showing "just how many celebrities cope with anxiety, it can possibly make others realize they’re less alone." In the weeks since the site launched, Lewin has "heard from several athletes and even more everyday people willing to share their stories" (THEATHLETIC.com, 9/14).

RAISING AWARENESS: MICHAEL PHELPS also appeared on CBS today to discuss his post-Olympic efforts, saying, "I’m very fortunate to talk about water conservation, or talk about mental health, or helping kids live healthy and active lifestyles and teach them the importance of water safety. ... In everything that I’m doing, I have the chance to save lives and that is way more important than ever winning an Olympic Gold Medal.” Phelps said of his mental health struggles, “I spent three or four days in my room in 2014 not wanting to be alive. Ever since the Olympics, I’ve gone through one major depression spell, maybe two since then. It’s not something that’s going to go away. It’s something that makes me who I am and ... there are people out there that are struggling from the same exact thing that I am.” Phelps noted that he is still in therapy and that he works with Talkspace, an online and mobile therapy provider. Phelps: "There are a lot of athletes and celebrities that 100% go through it" ("CBS This Morning," 9/17).
