Basketball HOFer EARL MONROE wants to open an "unusual charter high school" in N.Y. devoted to exposing teenagers to "potential careers in the sports industry, including scouting, coaching, nutrition, marketing, finance and law." Only some students "would play on school teams." NBA Commissioner Emeritus DAVID STERN "would be on the board" and film director DAN KLORES "would be a founder." A state oversight committee "decides Oct. 4 whether to approve the proposal." The proposal for the Lewis Katz New Renaissance Basketball Academy Charter School said that "most of its students will likely be poor and black or Hispanic, reflecting its South Bronx neighborhood" (WSJ.com, 9/13).

FOR A GOOD CAUSE: Nationals Assistant GM & VP BOB MILLER, formerly D-backs Dir of Baseball Operations, has placed his '01 World Series ring up for auction to raise money for his colleague, Nats Assistant GM & VP/Player Personnel DOUG HARRIS, who is "undergoing treatment for leukemia" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 9/14)....JORDAN SPIETH attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday to open an "all-inclusive, state-of-the-art playground" at Flag Pole Hill Park in Dallas, partially funded by Spieth's foundation (DALLASNEWS.com, 9/13).
