India native Sania Mirza retired from pro singles tennis in ’13, but being the best player from one of the world’s most populous nations -- and remaining active on social media -- has allowed Mirza to keep her spot as the top female athlete in the world in terms of social media value, according to data from MVPindex. Mirza has an estimated media value of $56.5M from her social posts over the last year, just above the $51.9M for Serena Williams. The athletes are ranked by the estimated media value that they delivered, via social media, to their respective corporate partners. Maria Sharapova rounds out the tennis triumvirate at the top with a value of just under $36M. Gold Medal-winning U.S. gymnasts Laurie Hernandez and Simone Biles round out the top five, respectively. Competitive gamer Pokimane (Imane Anys) was No. 6 among women, showing the quick growth of streaming and the value that well-known gamers/streamers can create on social media. Pokimane’s posts over the last year generated $22.3M in social value with about 66% of that coming from her Instagram account. Every one of Pokimane’s top 50 most-engaging social posts was a photo or selfie of herself.

Top Female Athletes On Social

MEDIA MAVENS: The top woman in sports media on social over the last year is currently a free agent. Former ESPN voice Jemele Hill will bring to her next gig more than 1.5 million social media followers. Hill generated more than 17 million engagements over the last year, with about 90% of those coming on Twitter (which typically drives the least engagement of the major social platforms). Only one other woman in sports media -- Outdoor Channel’s Eva Shockey -- generated more than 10 million engagements in the same time frame. Two of Shockey’s three most-engaging posts of the year were comments on the ongoing standoff between Colin Kaepernick and the NFL.
