NBC Sees Least-Viewed NFL Kickoff Game Since '08 Amid Weather Delay

NBC drew a total audience delivery of 19.5 million viewers for Falcons-Eagles on Thursday night, marking the least-viewed NFL Kickoff game since ’08, when Redskins-Giants drew 13.5 million. The NBC-only figure for Falcons-Eagles was 19.0 million. Thursday’s game had a 45-minute weather delay before it began. That ’08 game was started at 7:00pm ET due to considerations for the Republican National Convention. Last year’s Chiefs-Patriots had a TAD of 22.2 million viewers. Thursday night’s game peaked at 21.7 million viewers from 9:30-9:45pm ET, which was during the first quarter. The game also had an average minute audience of 570,000 viewers, which is the best figure yet for any game in the “SNF” package on NBC Sports Digital. Last year, Chiefs-Patriots had an AMA of 355,000 viewers (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor).

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES: In Philadelphia, Rob Tornoe reported a free live stream of Thursday's game was available on the NFL Mobile App, but it "frequently lost the signal during the first half." Viewers got an error message that read, "Fumble! Looks like there was a problem with the video." Social media was "flooded with complaints from fans upset over the quality of the stream." Yahoo Sports' app did not experience "any significant issues during the game" on Thursday. The NFL "acknowledged technical issues impacted the live stream of the season opener, and corrected the error during the early part of Thursday night's game" (PHILLY.com, 9/7).

MUM'S THE WORD: SI.com's Jacob Feldman noted Cris Collinsworth last season on "SNF" suggested that President Trump "apologize for calling player-protesters 'son of b----es.'" However, he "never noted the Eagles’ failure to visit the White House" during Thursday's broadcast (SI.com, 9/7).
