Notre Dame Uses Yankees For Inspiration For Newest Jerseys

Notre Dame's Under Armour uniforms for its game against Syracuse at Yankee Stadium is "Yankee-like," with "pinstripes on the sleeves," according to Sam Cooper of YAHOO SPORTS. The "classic Yankees cursive font" additionally makes up the Notre Dame logo on the chest plate. The "matte navy helmets are pretty sharp" as well. The game is part of Notre Dame's Shamrock Series, and the alternative uniforms that are part of those games have "always been polarizing." The Yankees uniforms "aren't as flashy," but they will be "sure to garner plenty of opinions" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/16). ESPN Radio’s Jason Fitz said, “I expected it to be terrible the way the Internet was reacting, and then I looked. It's a blue matte helmet with a circle in the middle with pinstripes and the Notre Dame logo. The helmet is fire. They should just keep the helmet. Get rid of the gold, it's tired. Get something new.” ESPN's Mike Golic Jr., who played football at Notre Dame, said he is going to "beat down our equipment manager's door" for one of the helmets. Golic: "You’re doing this to appease a different audience. A place as steeped in tradition as Notre Dame, we're all so used to wearing the gold. ... But to depart from that one game a year is fun” (“Golic & Wingo,” ESPN Radio, 8/17). But in Indianapolis, Andrew Hussey writes under the header, "Notre Dame Strikes Out With Yankees Inspired Uniforms" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 8/17). In DC, Matt Bonesteel wrote, "Navy blue helmets. Pinstripes everywhere. That font. All that's left is for John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman to call the game" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 8/16).

RIVAL SONS: Oregon's latest look involves four new uniform designs "featuring very visible number display and the return of the wings on the helmets." The new Nike uniforms were designed "with an eye toward traditional school colors and clean, professional designs" (OREGONLIVE.com, 8/15). Meanwhile, Oregon State is bringing back "Retro Benny," the school's look from '51-98, as "part of the helmets the Beavers plan to wear for their Homecoming game" against Cal on Oct. 20. Retro Benny merchandise is "on sale" at the campus Oregon State Beaver Store, as well as online (OREGONLIVE.com, 8/10).

NOTES: Grambling State debuted their new Adidas football jerseys, showing off 16 "different combinations of game day uniforms." The "highlight of the team's new jerseys are the all-red uniforms, a relic from legendary GSU football coach Eddie Robinson's days." GSU signed a five-year apparel deal with Adidas in May (MONROE NEWS STAR, 8/17)....UTEP will be "wearing three different versions of uniforms, including white, orange, and blue." The team has "incorporated the new Tennessee orange into their uniforms and helmets" for the '18 season. The blue helmet is "slightly different" than the one the team wore in '16 and '17. Instead of a silver outline, the school "switched to white with the new shade of orange" (KROD.com, 8/15)....Air Force "continues to garner national attention" with its Air Power Legacy Series uniforms. The '18 versions of the special uniforms pay "homage to the AC-130 aircraft" (Colorado Springs GAZETTE, 8/14).
