Marketplace Roundup

In New York, Chris Carlson noted the Syracuse athletic department is "entering the final year of its contract with Nike." SU AD John Wildhack said that an announcement on the next deal would "likely come this fall." But Wildhack "offered no indication" about which way SU was leaning. Last summer, Wildhack said that SU "received interest from both Under Armour and Adidas, but that he was inclined to negotiate with Nike first" because the brand had "been a good partner" (SYRACUSE.com, 8/16).

PAPA JOHN'S FALLOUT: In West Virginia, Joe Severino of the DAILY ATHENAEUM student newspaper noted in a front-page piece that WVU is "considering ending its corporate partnership with Papa John's." WVU Senior Associate AD/External Affairs Matt Wells said that the school had "concerns with Papa John's" after Founder John Schnatter's controversial comments. Wells said that a decision "has not been reached." Wells: "We will come to a decision hopefully here in the near future" (DAILY ATHENAEUM, 8/16).

FAN BOY: In Houston, Matt Young noted Rockets G Chris Paul is a "huge Dallas Cowboys fan," and his latest signature shoe -- the Jordan CP3.XI -- is a "salute" to the NFL team. The Cowboys' silver and navy colors "adorn the sneaker with the team's classic navy and white stripe going across the top of the shoe." The shoe will "retail for $115, and is supposed to be released before football season" (HOUSTONCHRONICLE.com, 8/16).

WESTBROOK GOES EAST: In Oklahoma City, Erik Horne notes Thunder G Russell Westbrook's "famous philosophy of 'Why Not?'" has shaped an "entire Asian tour by the Jordan Brand." For the third summer, Westbrook "spent a week in Asia promoting his philosophy as the theme of a Jordan Brand promotional tour." The collaboration has allowed Westbrook to "bring his creativity to the apparel giant, an amount of creative control that not many athletes have today" (OKLAHOMAN, 8/17).
