Blues Officially Break Ground On New $78M Practice Facility

The Blues held "official groundbreaking ceremonies" for their new $78M practice facility in Maryland Heights on Thursday, according to a front-page piece by Jim Thomas of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. The St. Louis Community Ice Center "will feature three indoor ice rinks, one covered outdoor rink, retail and restaurant space, plus space for Mercy health care sports medicine services." The St. Louis Legacy Ice Foundation "will manage the complex; the city of Maryland Heights will own it once the project is complete." The goal is to have the 25-acre, 277,000-square-foot project completed by September '19, which "seems ambitious." The Blues "will pay annual rent of $312,000 and also make a capital commitment" of about $2.7M. Lindenwood Univ. "will pay $275,000 in annual rent" to use the facility and will "make a capital contribution" of $1.5M. The main rink "will seat 2,500 spectators, with the other three rinks seating between 350 and 750 spectators." There will also be a "1,500-square-foot retail space" to sell Blues and other team merchandise, as well as a "2,000-square-foot restaurant plus outdoor patio dining, and a 12,700-square-foot St. Louis Ice Sports Hall of Fame." The outdoor rink and adjacent plaza "can be converted to a 4,000-4,500 capacity venue for concerts, festivals, markets and other events in the spring and summer" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 8/17).
