Patent Filing Shows Possible Name, Logo For Miami MLS Team

Several iterations of a black, pink and white logo for "Internacional Club de Futbol Miami" were "posted" to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office by MIPH, the same company that "filed trademarks" tied to the Miami Beckham United group, according to Michelle Kaufman of the MIAMI HERALD. The circular logos are "mostly black with pink and white trim, including what appear to be great blue herons whose intertwined legs form a letter 'M,' and a sunbeam." At the bottom of the logo is the "roman numeral MMXX," which is '20, the year the team is "scheduled to begin play" in MLS. Inter Miami would be the "shortened version of the team name." Miami Beckham United co-Owner Jorge Mas "wouldn't comment on the trademarked logo," but confirmed that Brooklyn-based branding firm Doubleday & Cartwright "has been working on the logo/shield and uniform." Mas said the team name, logo and colors would be announced "any day now" (MIAMI HERALD, 8/16).

LOVING THE LOOK: In Miami, Tim Elfrink wrote Mas and the Miami group "designed a truly great logo for a Miami MLS team." If this logo is "real, this bad boy gets so many things right." The logo itself is "stunning and muy Miami: There's the pink, black, and white color scheme, a criminally underused combination in sports teams that's also reminiscent of an art deco hotel lobby on Ocean Drive." The badge itself is "also gorgeous: Two back-to-back cranes, which live all over South Florida, forming an 'M' with their slender interlocking legs in front of a pink sunburst and the 'Miami' wordmark." There is "no guarantee" the team will "choose this logo." But it is "clear a significant mount of design work went into this product, and there are other hints it's the real deal" (MIAMINEWTIMES.com, 8/15). ESPN.com's Chris Wright wrote while the "lack of teal will leave those fans hopeful of 'Miami Vice'-inspired kits slightly disappointed, the prominence of pink should soften that blow." If this "truly is the name and crest" for Miami Beckham United, the club's look would be a "very fresh addition to MLS" (ESPN.com, 8/15).

BIRDS OF A FEATHER: Fox Sports' Alexi Lalas took to Twitter in search of a definitive answer on what bird species is depicted in the logo: "We could be looking at an @MLS with Loons, Pigeons, Eagles & Herons. Love it. We need more birds associated with teams. ... I'm now hearing that the bird on this rumored logo for the new Miami @MLS expansion team is a crane. If true, I dig it even more. But can one of you bird-brains out there confirm what bird this actually is? ... My kingdom for an ornithologist!" NWSL Portland Thorns Owner Merritt Paulson replied, "Egret. Likely snowy egret. NOT a crane." But nature writer Nick Lund wrote, "It is without a doubt a Great White Heron, a distinct subspecies of Great Blue Heron that is found only in South Florida." This was confirmed authoritatively by the American Birding Association: "Great White Heron. Perfect for south Florida! ... Even the legs are the right color. Impressive accuracy" (TWITTER.com, 8/15).
