Elon Musk Proposes Underground Train Tunnel To Dodger Stadium

Boring Co. said that the underground tunnel would transport about 1,400 people per eventBORING COMPANY

Elon Musk’s tunneling company, Boring Co., made a proposal to "build a 3.6-mile underground tunnel to take fans to Dodger Stadium," according to Alene Tchekmedyian of the L.A. TIMES. Boring said that the proposed Dugout Loop would be a "'zero-emissions, high-speed, underground public transportation system' that would take fans from one of three Metro Red Line stations to the stadium in less than four minutes." The company added that the loop would "transport about 1,400 people per event." Construction would "not begin until the proposal is fully approved." Boring said that it would "take up to 14 months to build" (L.A. TIMES, 8/16). WIRED.com’s Jack Stewart noted this project is just a single tunnel, meaning the service “can only run one way at a time.” It will “stage a number of skates at one end and sell tickets with fixed departure times.” When fans turn up, they will “pile into the 8- to 16-passenger pods, which will whisk them through the tunnel.” The skates will then be “parked at the other end.” After the game or concert, they “run the other way.” Boring is still “figuring out if it’ll need about 100 skates, or if it can work in batches of 12 to 15, sending the empty pods back to fetch more people” (WIRED.com, 8/15). ESPN.com's Darren Rovell noted the number of people that can be transported through the tunnel can "eventually rise to 2,800," or 5% of Dodger Stadium's capacity. Games at Dodger Stadium have been "legendary for their late-arriving crowds because of traffic jams that prolong rush hour past the first pitch." Boring was founded in December '16 by Musk, "inspired by the traffic problems" in L.A. Boring chose Dodger Stadium because the "game times and the direction people were going provided a tangible way of being able to solve a traffic problem" (ESPN.com, 8/15).
