SWAC Tabs Charles McClelland To Be Conference's Sixth Commissioner

McClelland is a former member of the NCAA's Leadership/Management CouncilTEXAS SOUTHERN UNIV.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference has named Texas Southern AD Charles McClelland its new Commissioner after he "spent the last 10 years" leading TSU athletics, according to Glynn Hill of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. McClelland said becoming SWAC Commissioner was an "opportunity that was too great to pass up." At TSU, he "played a role in finalizing a deal" with the Dynamo to "share the then newly constructed BBVA Compass Stadium with TSU football." McClelland "signed a three-year contract" with the SWAC. TSU Assistant AD Kevin Granger was named interim AD as the school "conducts a national search for McClelland’s replacement" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 8/14). In Houston, Mark Berman noted McClelland will "replace Duer Sharp who resigned in November" after serving as SWAC commissioner from '08-'17. McClelland took over as TSU AD in '08, and on his watch the school "won 24 league championships" (FOX26HOUSTON.com, 8/13). In Alabama, Mark Heim noted McClelland becomes the "sixth SWAC Commissioner" since the conference began 88 years ago. He is a "former member of the NCAA Leadership/Management Council" (AL.com, 8/13).

FILLING IN: The Big Sky Conference named Deputy Commissioner Ron Loghry interim Commissioner as the conference "begins its search to find a full-time replacement for Andrea Williams," who left to become CFP COO last month. Loghry has "served in the league office for 23 years" (St. George SPECTRUM, 8/14).
