NESN Red Sox color analyst Jerry Remy is "facing another battle with cancer," according to Chad Finn of the BOSTON GLOBE. NESN said that Remy will be absent from its Red Sox broadcasts while he "receives treatment." The network "did not indicate the specifics of Remy's diagnosis or how long he is expected to be away from the broadcast booth." Remy was "first diagnosed with lung cancer" in '08. He has "suffered multiple recurrences." He has been a NESN broadcaster on Red Sox games since '88 and last January "signed a multiyear contract extension" (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/8). Finn noted in Remy's absence, Steve Lyons will be in the booth with Dave O'Brien for the "next two series in Toronto and Baltimore" (TWITTER.com, 8/7). In Boston, Steve Buckley notes this is "not the first time" Remy has "received bad news from the medical people, but that doesn’t make it any easier." Even while "battling illness in recent years," Remy has been "enjoying a professional renaissance that’s breathtaking to behold." Despite "turmoil in his private life," Remy has "found peace in the booth in recent years." Buckley: "It never sounds like he’s going through the motions in order to bring home a paycheck; he has been involved, invested, entertaining" (BOSTON HERALD, 8/8). Also in Boston, Joe Fitzgerald writes under the header, "No Matter How Many Times Cancer Knocks Him Down, Jerry Remy Gets Back Up" (BOSTON HERALD, 8/8).

TWITTER REAX: Remy's former broadcast partner and FS San Diego Padres play-by-play announcer Don Orsillo: "If there is anyone who can fight again, it's you." NESN host Dennis Eckersley: "I thoroughly enjoy when we do games together as a 3-man booth. Get well, soon @Jerry_Remy!" NESN Red Sox commentator Tom Caron: "For the past 24 years, @Jerry_Remy has been a mentor, a confidant, and most importantly a friend. Devastated by the news he's fighting cancer again, and know he will fight it with every ounce of strength he has."
