Woods, Mickelson Head-To-Head Could Be First Of Many

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are "proceeding with plans to create a series of high-stakes head-to-head matches featuring many of the world's top-ranked players," according to Dave Shedloski of GOLF DIGEST. The matches, which would be similar to Woods and Mickelson's planned match in November, would take place "perhaps" twice per year -- "once around July 4 and once at Thanksgiving." Two-man teams are "being contemplated" -- including Woods and Mickelson "partnering in future four-ball matches." Meanwhile, many "pieces to the puzzle are still missing" to the Woods-Mickelson match this Thanksgiving weekend, though TNT has "agreed to broadcast" the showdown across multiple platforms. The proposed prize is $10M, "equal to the purse" of the just-completed WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Sources said that the PGA Tour is "not comfortable" with the payout, as it potentially "'overshadows' the total purse at all but a handful of its tournaments." Another "wrinkle to be ironed out" is avoiding a conflict with the World Cup of Golf, which is scheduled for Nov. 21-25. One "likely scenario" is a 6:00pm ET start to the Woods-Mickelson match that would require the final few holes to be "played under the lights -- not unlike the Monday Night Golf matches that Woods starred in" from '99-05 (GOLFDIGEST.com, 8/6).
