Weekend Plans With AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain Host Jenny Cavnar

Cavnar said it is a dream come true to be able to work in Denver, where she grew upJENNY CAVNAR

It’s been quite the year already for AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain’s JENNY CAVNAR after she became the first woman since ‘93 to call play-by-play for a televised game. Now with All-Star festivities fast approaching, the 12-year MLB reporting veteran is set to enjoy a weekend away from the field as she readies for the season’s second half. Cavnar dished to THE DAILY on her upcoming getaway, her love for the Colorado mountains and just how much that play-by-play opportunity meant to her.

UP IN THE AIR: This weekend I’m definitely catching up on some much-needed family time. In the midst of baseball season you’re just at the ballpark so much. I always try to either take the weekend before or after the All-Star break off. It’ll be really nice to have a true Colorado summer -- at least that’s my hope. We’re going to head up to the mountains and go to Beaver Creek for a few days. We’ll try to relax, unwind, probably do some hiking, barbecue out and really just chill. It’s so hard with a baby now, my husband and I used to be very adventurous! Now our big adventure is strapping on my 22-pound, 9-month-old, and that’s a workout in itself. The mountains are by far one of the best attributes of living in Colorado. The summertime up there is such a good relaxed vibe and it’s really fun to hang out and just catch the cooler air. It’s been in the hundreds and nineties down here in Denver so it’ll be nice to have that escape and get away for a little bit.

SHOW PREP: Most weekends I’m either at the field for the Rockies game or in studio. A typical Friday night game I’m at the ballpark around 2:30. I’ll hit the clubhouse, have our pregame meeting and then we go on the air at 6:00pm MT for our pregame show and then after that we watch the game and head back to the set for the postgame edition. Saturday I’m still usually at the park about 4 hours before first pitch. I’ll wake up and do some reading, catch up on articles not just on the Rockies but around the division and league. Then my producers will call at some point to talk about show ideas for that day.

DENVER DREAMS: As a Colorado native, for me to come home and get this job in ’12 was a dream. It’s been great to come back and really watch Denver blossom before our eyes. The city has changed so much from when I was a kid and even from 25 years ago. There’s a ton of different restaurants here and we’re big fans of craft breweries. We like to just hit up the local scene and take in all the new things happening around town. It’s really cool how active the city is and how involved the people in Colorado are so I try to do my part outdoors as well.

CALLING THE SHOTS: Going into this season we had just had the baby so that was a huge challenge in our personal life to try to figure out that realm. Then through work to get that new play-by-play challenge and have the opportunity to try something new was really awesome. It was super exciting but also nerve-wracking -- all the things you would think of for a player making their MLB debut honestly. They know they’re ready, they know they belong but it’s still a bit of the unknown when it comes to what’s about to happen. I also felt tremendous support from our community -- my colleagues, my producers, then even around the league. A bunch of different colleagues and teams reached out, and I’ve had other play-by-play folks come up to me with a ‘welcome to the club’-type acknowledgement.

IN THE MEANTIME: Recreationally, before we had the baby there’s a fun “everybody knows your name” type bar called The Ice House Tavern right next to Coors Field. When we first moved here we used to live in the building where it was located so we used to always say we had a bar in our basement. That was our hangout for a long time. The most recent show I binged was probably “THE CROWN” on Netflix. I’m a big “MODERN FAMILY” fan too, so that’s always on the DVR.
