Leagues and Governing Bodies

League Notes

NBA free agency begins Sunday morning at 12:01am ET, and the WALL STREET JOURNAL's Jason Gay writes the league "loves every second of the drama." Every sport "likes to see itself as a 12-month obsession, but the NBA is the closest to actually realizing it." Not even the NFL has a "hype ride like pro basketball enjoys as it vrooms from its championship to its draft to its goofy awards show to its free agency scramble" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 6/29).

THE FIRST DOMINO: On Long Island, Andrew Gross wrote John Tavares' free agency decision "will have a trickle-down effect throughout the NHL." In the wake of Tavares’ decision, a "salary bar will likely be set for other high-profile free agents." Some teams "will be forced to look elsewhere for upper-echelon help and this free agent market, which opens on Sunday, should take a more definitive form" (NEWSDAY, 6/28).

CLASS ACT: THE UNDEFEATED's Michael Fletcher wrote Wimbledon officials "did what was right" by seeding Serena Williams among the top 32 players in the tournament, despite her No. 183 world ranking after returning from maternity leave. Not seeding her "would only continue to punish Williams for the most human act of all: having a baby." The idea that pregnancy "should by itself harm a woman’s career is a notion from the unenlightened past" (THEUNDEFEATED.com, 6/27).
