Franchise Notes

In Miami, Greg Cote writes the David Beckham-Jorge Mas group leading the expansion MLS club is "rock solid, and the team is all about Miami, right down to the name it will choose." Having Beckham "out front and the glamour of South Beach will see no shortage of top players who will be interested in coming here, and the waiting fan base will be enormous." Cote: "I can see Miami's new MLS club quickly surpassing the Panthers and even the Marlins among South Florida's big pro teams in terms of interest level and passion." MLS Commissioner Don Garber "should be doing cartwheels to have this vibrant gateway city, this ownership group and these waiting fans joining its league."  (MIAMIHERALD.com, 6/28).

HEADING TO THE STATES: THE ATHLETIC's John Vogl reported Shannon Szabados, one of the "most recognizable names in women’s hockey," is joining the NWHL Buffalo Beauts in a move that could be the "most notable signing in league history." Adding the three-time Canadian Olympic G will "raise the profile of the Beauts in hockey-crazed Buffalo." Szabados "made international headlines by playing professionally in men’s leagues," and Beauts co-Owner & President Kim Pegula "hopes the signing will raise the profile of hockey everywhere" (THEATHLETIC.com, 6/28).

UNCERTAINTY AHEAD: In Denver, Mark Kiszla noted it has been a "tough summer" for Broncos and the Bowlen family after the recent disclosure that Annabel Bowlen has Alzheimer's, and it feels as if the team is "approaching a crossroads." Team Owner Pat Bowlen's "influence wanes a little with each passing year." Unless the trust designates Brittany Bowlen as the "heir apparent, it would not be shocking if the feud over ownership becomes testier before its resolution." Kiszla: "Pat Bowlen has been a wonderful caretaker for the sports franchise Denver loves best, but if his family must fight over ownership, might it ultimately be better for the Broncos if the team is sold?" (DENVER POST, 6/28).
