Facility Notes

In S.F., Matier & Ross reported the Warriors are "planning a mega-million-dollar public art installation outside the new Chase Center." The team confirmed that it has commissioned artist Olafur Eliasson to "create a 'signature piece of artwork' for one of the arena's plazas." The Warriors also are "putting out the call to local artists looking for commissions to provide 'one-of-a-kind, museum-quality art and photography ... that showcases Warriors, entertainment and regional history" (SFCHRONICLE.com, 6/27).

MOVIN' ON UP: Single-A Carolina League Potomac Nationals Chair & CEO Art Silber and his family are considering "relocating the team to Fredericksburg" to a new ballpark. The 5,000-seat park is expected to cost $35M and "will be located at Celebrate Virginia South." Under an agreement with the Fredericksburg City Council, the ballpark would be "privately financed by the baseball club and the city will not incur any debt." The city "would be considered an 'anchor tenant' of the stadium in exchange for an annual payment" to the Nationals of $1.05M for 30 years (Fredericksburg FREE LANCE-STAR, 6/27).

NEW OWLS' NEST: FAU's new $40M training center is "slated to be completed" next year, and the school feels it will "enable them to keep pace with schools from larger conferences." The Schmidt Family Complex for Academic & Athletic Excellence "will move the sports team's headquarters to the west side of FAU Stadium." FAU AD Brian White: "That facility is going to be a complete game-changer for us. From a fundraising perspective, that's going to be really important." The 96,000-square-foot facility "will provide athletes a haven to train for sports and academics." In addition to a new weight room and two outdoor football practice fields, the facility will also "feature study rooms and academic space for the MBA Sports Management program" (South Florida SUN SENTINEL, 6/28).
