Maryland Introduces AD Damon Evans As Loh Defends Choice

The Maryland job is redemption for Evans, who lost his UGA job after being charged with drunk drivingUNIV. OF MARYLAND

Univ. of Maryland AD Damon Evans during his introductory press conference yesterday spoke about how "grateful he was for being given a second chance" by President Wallace Loh, according to Don Markus of the BALTIMORE SUN. Evans, who had served in an interim role since former AD Kevin Anderson went on a "six-month sabbatical in mid-October before resigning in April, was named Monday as Anderson’s successor." Evans beat out two other finalists, Temple AD Patrick Kraft and former Tennessee AD John Currie, from "among the six candidates Loh said were interviewed for the job." Yesterday's press conference was "redemption for Evans," who in '10 "lost his job at Georgia days after being charged in Atlanta with drunken driving." Maryland spent a reported $120,000 on an outside search firm to identify potential candidates, and when asked about the perception that the outcome of the two-month search was decided before it began, Loh said that "'it was an open and national search' and that Evans was simply the best person for the job." Loh said Evans is “the right man at the right time to lead Maryland athletics.” Evans inherits an athletic department that will need to raise $19M to "help cover" part of the $41M in "costs when the Cole Field House project was expanded" (BALTIMORE SUN, 6/27).

EVERYONE DESERVES ONE: Loh said the hiring of Evans is "truly a human story, a very typical human story of fall and redemption from mountain top to valley bottom." Loh: "That tells me something about his personal qualities of perseverance of striving forward, of never giving up, and I hope that personal story of redemption is also telling us something about the values of the University of Maryland. We are committed to excellence and we are committed to inclusion" (ESPN.com, 6/26).
