Heart Of Dallas Bowl Gets Funding From City In Two-Year Deal

City taxpayers will pitch in $150,000 a year for the next two years for the bowl gameGETTY IMAGES

The Dallas City Council is "poised to pump money" back into the ESPN-owned Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl, as the city's Tourism Public Improvement District "will pay up to $200,000 a year for the next two years" for the game, according to Tristan Hallman of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. The council earlier this year "rejected paying $800,000 in grants over two years to ESPN" for the game held annually at the Cotton Bowl, but now, city officials have "returned with a new proposal that slashes half a million dollars from the cost to taxpayers." The plan was "met with a mixed response," but "won approval" yesterday from council's Quality of Life and Arts & Culture Committee. The final amount paid by the TPID "will be based on attendance and lodging revenues." The city's taxpayers "will then pitch in $150,000 a year for the next two years." The full council is "set to vote on the grant in August." Assistant City Manager Joey Zapata said that under the new structure, ESPN "'will have to work a little harder' to get better attendance and more revenue." Heart of Dallas Bowl Exec Dir Brant Ringler said that the extra money from the city and the hotels "wasn't a deal breaker, but it is a big help." He added that ESPN is "committed to partnering with the city" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/26).
