Washington Athletics Among Tops In Country With Recent Success

UW football has appeared in the CFP and Fiesta Bowl since hiring PetersenGETTY IMAGES

Recent results from the Univ. of Washington have put the school "in the discussion" of having the "most complete athletic department in the country," according to Matt Calkins of the SEATTLE TIMES. It starts with football, which "vaulted itself back into the national spotlight well ahead of schedule" upon the hiring of coach Chris Petersen. Two years after Petersen took over, the school "stampeded their way to a Pac-12 title and College Football Playoff berth, then reached the Fiesta Bowl the next season." Women’s basketball made an "unexpected run" in '16 by reaching the Final Four. UW baseball this year made its "first ever College World Series," and softball won its "first eight of the postseason before falling to Florida State in the national championship series." The UW women’s golf team "won its first national championship" in '16. The women’s rowing team "swept the three grand events en route to the national championship last year and finished second this year." The men’s team -- although not NCAA-sanctioned -- "won the overall points title in the national championships for the 11th time in 12 years." Generally speaking, there "hasn’t been a fall, winter or spring that has failed to produce something memorable" at UW in "quite a while." UW AD Jen Cohen "can’t be deprived of credit" (SEATTLE TIMES, 6/13).
